MOVING OUT OF YOUR RENTAL PROPERTY WILL BE A STRESS-FREE EXPERIENCE IF YOU FOLLOW THIS FOUR-STEP GUIDE.

It’s Time To Go! Moving Out

Step one: Give notice

If you are on a month-to-month lease, you need to notify your landlord of your intention to move out in writing. The notice period you are required to give is usually between 14 and 28 days prior to your last day of tenancy. Refer to your lease agreement to find the notice period that applies to you.

If you are on a fixed-term lease and want to move out on its expiry date, you still must notify your landlord in writing with the appropriate notice period. However, if you want to move out before your fixed-term lease has expired, you may be liable for costs associated with breaking your lease.

Step two: Clean up

You must leave the property in a reasonably clean condition before moving out. That also means removing any fixtures, such as picture hooks, you’ve added to the property. You must also not leave behind any personal possessions such as furniture, appliances or clothing.

Step three: Collect your bond

If your landlord is satisfied with the condition of the property, your bond will be returned to you in full. However, if repairs are required, part or all of your bond may be used to pay for them. If you and landlord agree on how much of the bond will be returned to you, you must sign a Bond Claim form to receive the money. If there is a disagreement that can’t be resolved, the landlord must apply to VCAT within 10 business days following the end of your tenancy.

Step four: Disconnect your utilities

You’ll need to get in touch with your gas, electricity, internet and phone providers to turn off your utilities on the day you move out. You’ll also need to fill out at change of address form at the post office to redirect your mail, and leave a forwarding address with your landlord.
